Lauren Ann Marshall
October 20, 1982 - May 13, 2007
Lauren was a beautiful, fun-loving young woman with the world at her fingertips. She was 24, had just completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at CSULB and had been hired at a local restaurant as a manager trainee.
She was enjoying and loving life with her family and boyfriend of three years. But she had battled epilepsy since elementary school, and finally as it progressed through high school and college years, she decided to risk the series of frightening brain surgeries that might be a permanent cure. She recovered quite well, and had 2-1/2 months seizure-free until Mother’s Day, 2007. That afternoon, during a nap, she suffered a grand mal seizure that ended her life much too soon.
While we, her family, were unaware of this possibility, the medical world had a name for this: SUDEP, Sudden Unexpected Death by Epilepsy. Although too late to help our beautiful Lauren, we hope to honor her memory by supporting this cause, to search, for a CURE.
The Dogs get New Homes!
After holding the golf tournament for five years and donating in excess of $60,000 to CURE (Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy), we decided to incorporate our own non-profit organization, Team Lauren. We wanted to be able to see our fundraising at work, and decided to purchase seizure alert/response dogs, and have been working with an organization called Service Dogs for Independence, founded by Elizabeth Morris, in Tucson, Arizona.
These therapy dogs are trained to recognize a seizure and respond to it by alerting help; therefore, preventing a seizure from going un-treated.
Who is Team Lauren?
Team Lauren was established on what would have been Lauren’s 25th birthday, October 20, 2007.
Her dad, Mark, wanted to celebrate her life by playing golf with some friends. Thirty-seven friends and family members joined Mark on that day, intent on remembering Lauren and raising money for the research of epilepsy. Lauren’s family decided to continue the tradition, and since then the event has grown to what it is today.
We will be teein’ it up for a cure once again this year and hope to exceed last year’s great success! This day will include filling the course with 144 golfers, a buffet dinner, raffles, prizes and a helicopter golf ball drop. This day will be fun-filled and action-packed, and most importantly, will continue to contribute funds to the cause.
Team Lauren is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization supported by the generous contributions of individuals, corporations and foundations.
